Floating House

London, UK

Transforming a 35 square metre 1960’s navy workboat into a peaceful contemporary 4-berth London home and artist’s studio.

An insulated cedar top replaces the original leaky fibreglass one, and large double glazed windows create a light filled interior enabling hanging plants to thrive. The interior environment stays cool in summer and in Winter only requires a log burner to heat it.

The interior layout utilises long lines of sight and curved walls to make it feel spacious, and varied levels separate the open plan living and kitchen area from the two sleeping cabins at each end to define function and maximise privacy.

Recycled materials are used throughout. The floor is reclaimed Canadian Maple, wooden stud walls and shelving is recycled from an art gallery, and cupboard doors and bathroom accessories are made from original boat fixtures.
