Greenland mountain-side dry stone wall and wood shelter from 100% recycled materials

The Shelter

Kangerlussuag, Greenland

A 10 day live build residency with Finish architect Sami Rintala and 14 international graduates and students to design and build a mountain-side shelter for the residents of Kangerlussuaq. Blending seamlessly with its environment, the shelter was built from 100% recycled materials sourced from the local dump and surrounds, including nails, wood, and stone.

The structure is open to the elements yet the internal seating and a central fireplace provides shelter and warmth for hikers. Three openings are positioned offering views to the incredible landscape beyond.
